American automakers chrysler and GM were deemed too big to fail and bailed out I think 2008 - 2012. They were able to achieve fiscal sustainability after restructuring of business model & culture. Perhaps similar reforms will be underway in germany. A high % of Elon Musk's success in the automotive sector could be due to normalized industry stagnation and complacency. If Elon hadn't come along BMW would still be toting cupholders in cars as the next big thing.
