La Catrina is a figure in Mexican culture representative of the Day of the Dead. She originated as a mockery of those elegant, well-dressed women who wore a lot of makeup to make themselves look paler (they were of Indigenous descent and therefore had dark skin), who were said to resemble skulls. Many people think she represents death, but that’s not exactly the case. Nowadays, a wide variety of makeup styles are used, not necessarily depicting skulls.
