Back in 2014, a video went viral back here in India that made two young girls the talk of the nation. These girls from Rohtak in northern India were applauded for taking a stand against eve teasing. They were celebrated for teaching their molesters a lesson that would scare every molester. Media gave full coverage to these two sisters and the four boys were put behind bars and had their faces aired on news and newspapers. They were seen as criminals, while was justified if we went by what the girls had to say.
However, the boys, who were seen mercilessly being beaten by belts and later forced to leave the bus they were travelling in, decided to fight for themselves. It took them 4 years of their life to get declared as innocents. 4 years are too much for a person who being innocent was seen as criminals. These years they were jobless, homeless and mercy less. People refused to have any contact with them. Their dream of having a normal life with a good job was crushed.
While the nation kept celebrating these sisters for their bravery, it took four years for the boy's to prove how innocent they were. That's how judiciary works here. The investigation led to shocking realisation that the girls were actually the culprits and not the boy's. The girls who were celebrated as Bravehearts were actually the molesters who harassed the boy's and beat them publicly just for refusing to vacate their seats on a public transport.
Now that the boys are declared innocent by the highest court, isn't it the media's responsibility to help them get back their lost dignity and explain to the society that you cannot trust a woman just because she is a woman?? Well, the boys have demanded that the media does what is needed and expected from them. I wish the girls get their share of punishment for the crime they have committed.
