And yes, it's not a crazy theory of four crazy people. There are many scientists and geniuses who have doubted and who doubt the existence of the laws of universal gravitation.
The physicist Erik Verlinde, a respected string theorist and professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam, Stony Brook, N.Y., presented an essay in which he affirms that gravity does not exist.

However, what would happen if everything were an illusion, a kind of cosmic luxury, or a side effect of something else that is happening to deeper levels of reality?
So says Erik Verlinde, 48, a respected string theorist and professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam, who argues that gravity is, in effect, an illusion, and has caused a continuous hubbub among physicists, or, less, among those who say they understand it.
Radically changing the logic of 300 years of science, argues in a recent essay, entitled "On the Origin of Gravity and Newton's Laws," that gravity is a consequence of the venerable laws of thermodynamics, which describe the behavior of the heat and gases.
"For me, gravity does not exist," said Verlinde, who was recently in the United States to explain himself. Not that it can not fall, but Verlinde is among several physicists who say that science has been seeing gravity in the wrong way, and that there is something more basic from where it "emerges", just as stock markets emerge from collective behavior of individual investors, or the elasticity of the mechanics of atoms.
Seeing gravity from this angle, they say, could shed light on some of the disconcerting cosmic problems of the day, such as dark energy, a kind of antigravity that seems to be accelerating the expansion of the universe, or dark matter that is supposed to be necessary to hold the galaxies together.
Verlinde's argument starts something that could be called the theory of gravity that "makes your hair stand on end".
It says something like this: hair curls with heat and humidity because it is more curly than it is curly, and nature likes choices. So it takes a force to flatten it and eliminate the options of nature. We must forget enough the curved space or the spooky remote attraction described by Isaac Newton's equations to navigate Saturn's rings, the force we call gravity is simply a by-product of nature's propensity to maximize clutter.
Some of the best physicists in the world say they do not understand Verlinde's essay, and many are frankly skeptical. However, some of those same physicists say that it has provided a new perspective on some of the deepest questions of science, namely, why space, time and gravity even exist, even if he has not answered them yet.
"Some people have said that it can not be right; others, that is correct and that we already knew - that is correct and deep, correct and trivial, "said Andrew Strominger, a string theorist at Harvard.
"What has to be said," he continued, "is that it has inspired a lot of interesting discussions. It's just a very interesting collection of ideas that touch things that we do not deeply understand about our universe. That's why I liked it."
Verlinde is not an obvious candidate to climb the walls. He and his brother Herman, a Princeton professor, are famous twins known more for their mastery of explicit string theory mathematics than for philosophical delusions.
Born in Woudenberg, in the Netherlands, in 1962, the brothers were inspired at an early age in a couple of television shows of the 1970s on particle physics and black holes. "They completely trapped me," Verlinde recalled. He and his brother obtained joint doctorates from the University of Utrecht in 1988 and then went to Princeton, Erik to the Institute of Advanced Studies and Herman to the University. After coming and going across the ocean, they obtained ownership in Princeton. And they married sisters, and they divorced them. Erik left Princeton to go to Amsterdam to be near his children.
He caused his first great stir when he was a graduate student by inventing the Verlinde Algebra and the Verlinde formula, which are important in string theory, the so-called theory of everything, which proposes that the world is made of small vibrating strings.
One might ask why a string theorist is interested in Newton's equations. After all, Newton was overthrown by Einstein a century ago, who explained gravity as a deformation in the geometry of space-time, and who, some theorists think, could be overthrown in turn by string theorists. In the last 30 years, it has been "undressed", in Verlinde's words, to gravity as a fundamental force.
This dismantling began in the 1970s with the discovery of Jacob Bekenstein of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Stephen Hawking of the University of Cambridge, among others, of a mysterious connection between black holes and thermodynamics, culminating with the finding of the second in 1974 that when the quantum effects are taken into account, the black holes would shine and eventually explode.
With a provocative calculation in 1995, Ted Jacobson, a theoretician at the University of Maryland, showed that given a few of these holographic ideas, Einstein's equations of general relativity are just another way of enunciating the laws of thermodynamics.
Those exploding black holes (at least in theory - no one has ever been observed) ignited a new strangeness of nature. The black holes, in effect, are holograms, like the images in third dimension that can be seen in bank cards.
All the information about what has been lost inside them is encrypted on the surface. Physicists have wondered since then how this "holographic principle" - that we may all be shadows on a distant wall - applies to the universe and where it came from.
In a striking example of a holographic universe, Juan Maldacena of the Institute for Advanced Studies built a mathematical model of a "can of soup" universe, where what happened inside the can, including gravity, is encoded on the label outside of the can. the can, where there was no gravity, as well as a less spatial dimension. If dimensions do not matter and gravity does not matter, how real can they be?
Lee Smolin, a quantum gravity theorist at the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, said about Jacobson's essay that "it is one of the most important essays of the last 20 years".
However, at first, it drew little attention, said Thanu Padmanabhan of the Interuniversity Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, India, who has taken up the issue of "emergent gravity" in several trials in recent years. Padmanabhan said that the connection with thermodynamics is deeper than just Einstein's equations of other theories of gravity. "Gravity," he said recently in a talk at the Perimeter Institute, "is the thermodynamic limit of the statistical mechanics of space-time atoms."
Verlinde said he had read Jacobson's essay many times over the years, but apparently no one had understood the message. "It is clear that we must take these analogies seriously, but for some reason nobody does," he complained.
His essay, sent to the physics file in January, resembles Jacobson's in many ways, but Verlinde gets angry when people say he did not add anything to Jacobson's analysis. What is new, he said, is the idea that differences in entropy can be the driving force behind gravity, that gravity is, as he himself puts it, an "entropic force." That inspiration came to him courtesy of a thief.
When he was about to return home after a vacation in southern France last summer, a thief broke into his room and stole the laptop, keys, passport, everything. "I had to stay another week," he said, "and I got this idea."
On the beach, his brother received a series of emails; First, he said that he had to stay longer; then, that he had a new idea, and finally, on the third day, he knew how to derive Newton's laws from primary principles, at which moment Herman remembers thinking, "What's happening? What have you been drinking?"
When they spoke the next day, everything made more sense, at least for Herman. "It's interesting," Herman said, "how having to change plans can lead to different thoughts."
Think of the universe as a box of Scrabble letters. There is only one way to accommodate the letters to write Gettysburg Speech, but an astronomical number of ways to spell nonsense. The box is shaken and will tend to foolishness, the clutter will increase and the information will be lost as the letters turn to their most probable configurations. Could this be severity?
As a metaphor for how this might work, Verlinde used the example of a polymer - a strand of DNA, say, a noodle or a hair - that coils. "It took me two months to understand the polymers," he said.
The resulting essay, as Verlinde himself admits, is a bit vague. "It is not the basis of a theory," he explained. "I do not pretend it's a theory. People should read the words I am saying in contrast to the details of the equations. "
Padmanabhan said he sees little difference between Verlinde's and Jacobson's essays, and that the new element of an entropic force lacks mathematical rigor. "I doubt that these ideas pass the test of time," he wrote in an email from India. Jacobson said he can not understand.
John Schwarz of the California Institute of Technology, one of the fathers of string theory, said the essay is "very provocative." The Verlinde brothers are now trying to reformulate these ideas in more technical terms of string theory, and Erik has been traveling a lot, to the Perimeter Institute in May and to Stony Brook University on Long Island, promoting the end of gravity. Michael Douglas, a professor at Stony Brook, described Verlinde's work as "a set of ideas that resonates in the community," adding, "everyone hopes to see if this can be more precise."
Until then, the jury of Verlinde's peers will not be in office. During lunch in New York, Verlinde mused on his experiences over the past six months. He pointed out that he had simply surrendered to his intuition. "When I came up with this idea, I was really excited, even, elated," he said. "It is not often that you have the opportunity to say something new about Newton's laws. I do not see immediately that I am wrong. That's enough to keep going."
He commented that friends encouraged him to take risks and that he does not regret it. "If it is shown that I am wrong, something will have been learned in any way. It would have been worse to ignore it. "
The next day Verlinde gave a more technical talk to a lot of physicists in the city. He recalled that someone told him the other day that the story of gravity that is unfolding is like that of the emperor's new clothes.
"We've known for a long time that gravity does not exist," said Verlinde, "it's time to shout it."
