Coffee cultivation in Aceh was massively started during the reign of the Dutch government in Tanah Gayo in 1904. At that time, the Central Aceh region or now known as Bener Meriah Regency was used as a Nordkus Atjeh afdeeling which was capitalized in Sigli. One of the focus of the Dutch Government at that time was the development of the plantation sector including the coffee plantation in Tanah Gayo which was located at 1,000 - 1,700 m above sea level. In 1972, Central Aceh District (Bener Meriah District) was listed as the largest producer of coffee compared to other districts in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province with a total area of 19,962 ha.
