Construction of Sydney’s new light rail line continues along George Street in the CBD.
The controversial project to build a 12-kilometre light rail system from Randwick in Sydney’s east, past Central Station and through the heart of the CBD to Circular Quay commenced in 2015 and was initially scheduled for completion in early 2019, just in time for the next state election.
With much of George Street, previously one of the CBD’s main arterial roadways closed to vehicular traffic for good, massive cost and time blowouts the project has attracted considerable public criticism. None more so though, than from the small business operators along the route who have been forced to endure years of interruption. With reduced passing trade businesses have suffered financially with may forced to shut their doors and those that have survived now required to tighten their belts even further with the recent news that construction will now not be complete until at least 2020 and possibly longer.
The images in this article were all taken earlier this week on George Street, and it’s painfully apparent that the CBD section of the light rail is still a long way off completion.
