Greetings!
Community service is one thing that is lacking in our society today. Although during my NYSC days, we were asked to belong to a CDS group where we help the host community with such services we can render to them for free, but just because we are not used to rendering services for free right from our high school or secondary school days, some of us still find it difficult to do what we are being asked to confirm our host communities for free.
Well, I would say that the idea being introduced by the NYSC authority is a good one and this is because it helps in making the youth of our nation a selfless youth, but to me, it would have been good and fine had it been the idea has come earlier maybe from our primary or secondary school. I believe if this had started a long time before the NYSC, people would not find it kind of difficult to carry out this act of selfless services to their various communities.
Having said so much about people and the way they render community services in their locality, I would like to delve into the topic of the prompt before me which is all about, “community service.”
Looking at the content of the prompt, I am of the contrary opinion that community services should not be forced down on anyone and most especially the students in the high school or secondary school and this is due to the fact that if such is being done to them, it would amount to them being denied of their freedom.
As we all know that as a citizen of this country, we are not bound to do things which we are not interested in but are forced on us, so if this should be the case, I would not support things being forced down on people, most especially the young people just because they have not intention of partaking in community services, one thing is believe in is that, had it been that their predecessors have done what is right during their own time, this would not have been the story as we would have moved beyond forcing them to do selfless community services, but because of the failure of those before us, we now find it difficult to do the needful and to me, that's what is affecting our society as people now see community services as a waste of time, now, nothing goes for free anymore.
Well, my own candid advice to those in authority if they truly want to change the situation of things and make people most especially the younger ones to partake in community services is to try and sensitize the students in the host community on the need for community service and the benefit thereof. They should instead of forcing them to do against their will and wish, compel them to do it and this is the only way I think they can get the necessary and desired result.
