The issue of paying tithes by Christians is a question that many Christian believers have been secretly grappling with. I have posed this question personally. Tithing refers to rendering a tenth of income to God. It was explicitly stipulated in the Old Testament. In Malachi 3:10, God explains, bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, and prove me now herewith. The nation of Israel had been given the Law of Moses, which required people to give tithes to maintain the temple and Levites.
However, in the New Testament we find something more serious. Christians do not live under the Old Covenant law like Israel did. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, the Bible writes, Every man according as he purposeth in his heart so let him give, not fainifully, nor as necessitous: for god loveth a cheerful giver. This demonstrates that it has become a heart thing to give. It is not forced. It is not about fear. It is about love.
In my opinion, it is not only about whether we should pay tithes or not but about whether we can trust God that we are able to give. Even Jesus Christ talked of giving. In Luke 6:38 He said, Give and it shall be given thee. Generosity is a religious value.
Other Christians volunteer to donate a tenth. Others give more. Others contribute less and with pure hearts. Obedience and love are what are important. Tithing must not be an encumbrance. It should be an act of worship. Eventually, God examines the heart. And I am sure that giving with sincerity He is satisfied.
