Everyone that you meet in the course of your road to success has specific role to play and are there for a reason - so you should place value on that. Asides that, you also have a role to play in their lives. This is why friendship is not parasitism but a form of symbiotic and mutualistic relationship.

Do not only look for what your friends or your partner will do for you. What about what you can, in your own little way, do for them? Some people will keep you as friends if they hope to derive benefit from you but it is not what it should always be - there should be reciprocation.
When you want to wash your hands, for example, if any of the hands refuses to corporate with the other, the both of them will remain dirty. To make them clean, the right hand will rub the left and vice versa, then both of them will come out clean - this is exactly how friendship works.
More so, you should not look down on that friend that has nothing to offer at the moment, but you can help him out to gain back his feet. Who knows, tomorrow, the scenario may be reversed and he will be the one to raise you up.
Always try to look beyond the now. Many people have lost potential great friends simply because they were just focused on the now and their myopism beclouded their sense of perception from seeing the potentials in the person.

True friendship goes beyond immediate gains. If you are only keeping someone because of what you hope to get from them in the immediate, then that is not true friendship. Remember this; your rising, sometimes, is dependent on how you lift others.
