One of the things that you need to understand about life and about people is that everyone will leave something behind. Some may leave wealth, influence, achievements, while others may leave behind memories that can inspire and motivate the future generations. Having a lasting influence is what is called legacy. You have to understand that impact is not just what you have accomplished during your lifetime, but it is also the positive influence that your life will continue to make even when you are long gone. A lot of people spend years trying to build their personal success, but not everyone build legacy. What makes the difference is not what you have achieved for yourself but the impact you have created in the life of others.

Building a legacy does not mean that you have to accumulate so much wealth, nor does it require political power and fame. It actually begins with the daily choices that you make, the values that you stand by, and how you influence the people around you. Trust me, there are people who were very wealthy, but without leaving any legacy, and there is nothing to remember them for. Every act of kindness you show to people, every lesson you teach to someone, every life you affect positively, every good value you uphold, are part of what will build a good legacy for you. Which means that you will be remembered for what you did, not what you had.
In order to leave a good legacy, you have to learn to invest in people. I remember the neighborhood I once lived in some years back. The street was later named after a particular man who lived there just for a few years before he packed out. It was not because he was the richest in the neighborhood, a lot of people were richer then him, nor because he lived there the longest, actually he just lived for a few years. But in the few years he lived there, the neighborhood felt his presence. There was a particular path that got bad and erosion had eaten deeply into it. He had to organise with some locals and they fixed the place. He made sure that a dumpster was allocated for the street to ease up waste disposal, and a lot of other things he did. Even after he left, people still remembered him.
One of the greatest investments that you will make is the one you make in the lives of others. When you invest in people, it will multiply your influence. Try to encourage people, mentor and teach people who need your guidance, share the knowledge that you have, and do not hoard it, then try to help others to discover their potentials. No matter what you have achieved and the success that you have, if you do not have a successor, then you have not built a legacy. When you have inspired someone, the person will go ahead and inspire others too. In that way, you are building a better community, and you are creating a ripple effect that will outlive you. When you change someone's life directly, you may be changing many other lives indirectly.

However, in order to do this, you have to first live by a strong value. It is from what is within you that you can give. A lasting legacy will definitely begin with a good character. You cannot be doing something that is obviously wrong and expect to build a legacy around it. You have to first build strong values; like honesty, integrity, respect for people, humility, etc. All these will be remembered more than your material possession. People may not remember you for what you owned, but they will not forget how you have lived well, and how your life has inspired them.
There is a reason why you are blessed, and why you have gathered experience; so that you can use it for a greater good, to bless others, and to inspire them positively. The lessons you learnt in your life's journey can be used to inspire others. As a matter of fact, the ones you learnt through failures can also be used to teach lessons to others to avoid the same mistake, and to make wiser decisions. So you see, you have all it takes to create a lasting influence, but it starts with a willingness and a decision to do so.
