The word "aromatherapy" simply means the therapeutic use of aromas from selected fragrances gotten from lotions and inhalants mostly of plant-based origin. Aromatherapy usually aims at improving health, mental well-being and soothing mood. It goes beyond the use of beautiful smells from essential oils and plant extracts, It promotes and enhances the health of the body, mind and spirit.
Pure and refined Plant-based oil is usually the component of essential oil used in aromatherapy, it excludes other aromatics like incense, synthetic oil or fragrances. It does include many market products with labels of aromatic with no therapeutic benefit, nothing but labels
Aromatherapy is an all-rounded kind of therapy, from a sensual point of view, its effects are felt on several levels - physical, spiritual, emotional and mental. This means that physical ailments and some illnesses can benefit from aromatherapy, as well as emotional, psychological and mental disturbances
If efficiently combined with other modalities its effect can be remarkable. For instance, we have aromatherapists who also practice massage, naturopathy, nursing, midwifery, kinesiology and many other fields.
Aromatherapy, when incorporated as a modality, is aimed at an individual's particular needs with a specific goal in mind, unique treatment programs are created alongside aromatherapy based on the knowledge and professionalism of the therapist. This may include some home-based modalities or other body treatments.
Aromatherapy can also be taken advantage of on a more fundamental level at home by using essential oils in inhalers, diffusers, skincare products, in massages or body oils. They can even be used for home-based purification.
Some people are of the notion that aromatherapy is replacing traditional medicine. Although it is another option for practising well-being, let it be known crystal clear that aromatherapy is in no way a substitute for modern medicine. Instead, see it as a medium for enhancing your well-being both physically and psychologically using scintillating aromas that stimulate and induces certain responses. When practising aromatherapy, your goal should be to use the essential oils to boost your mental health and improve your body's natural ability to balance regulate, and heal, itself.
How Does It Work?
Aromatherapy’s effectiveness is dependent on the ability of the hypothalamus to be stimulated by the inhalation of scintillation aromas. Important bodily functions, like sleep, hunger, thirst and emotional responses are regulated by the hypothalamus. On reaching the hypothalamus, the stimulus initiated by the scent runs through the limbic system, the hippocampus, a part of your brain which is responsible for memory. Coupled with helping us associate a certain scent with a specific memory, the body also starts a healing process.
