Currently, I am short-sighted(myopia), which means I cant see objects which are at a considerable distance away from me clearly which wasn't so before, and of course, I use a glasses with a concave lens(in case you are wondering what a concave lens is, don't stress, it just a lens for people that cant see far distance object clearly) or read this for more information on a concave lens 👇👇

A concave lens is the opposite of a convex lens. Here one or both of the lens surfaces are curved inwards. That is, the centre of the lens is closer to the plane than the edge. A concave lens is used to correct short-sightedness (myopia). A short-sighted person's focus is focusing on the back of the eyeball. The concave lens pushes the rays of light further apart so that they arrive together in proper focus at the back of the eye.

I am partially dependent on my concave lens, I use it outdoors when I need to see writing or people at a distance clearly most times. Frankly, I wish I didn't have to use my glasses in some cases. What are the likely causes of eye damage especially when it is not genetically induced or caused by ageing👇👇

Below are 8 ways you might be damaging your eyes:

1. Rubbing your eyes regularly

Our hands in most cases harbour bacteria, fungi and even some microscopic organisms and, rubbing your eyes with those germ-infested hands, exposes your eyes to these germs. Not only that, but you can also end up causing damage to your cornea as a result of the constant rubbing motion which would eventually result in loss of vision. Your eyes have the natural ability to produce tears that washes away debris that may have accumulated over time, so try to keep your hands away from them as much as you can.

2. Staring too close at your Smartphones for a long time

Staring too close to your mobile phones for long hours may be as a result of trying to read those tiny texts, maybe the reason your eyes are hurting day after day. It can also cause blurred vision, dry eyes and even dizziness. Therefore, ensure you put your phone away at least every 30 minutes to give your eyes a break or better still make the font size of those texts bigger so that you don't have to strain your eyes to read them.

3. Watching the Television at Night in a Dark Room

Looking at any type of screen in a dark room with the screen as the only source of light is very bad for your eyes. The level of the light emitted changes rapidly, so your eyes have to work hard to process the changes, which can lead to headaches, dry eyes, eye strain, eye pain and even eye redness. Even worse, it can distort your sleep schedule. Also, reading in dim light is not advisable as they have an adverse effect on the eyes in the long run.

4. Constant use of Eyedrops

While you might be using them to temporarily alleviate dry eyes, using them too often can actually damage your eyes over time. So it's better when you are making use of one to do so with a doctor's instructions and make sure to stop using them immediately to prevent irritation and eye rashes.

5. Wearing Expired Face Makeups

You may not be happy dumping that favourite makeup especially when only half of the tube is used up,but it would serve as a savior your eyes in the long run. Continual use of that expired makeup can cause irritation on the eyes or even worse, a very nasty eye infection. So when that your favourite face makeup gets clumpy, it's time to throw it away. Don't add water; it will just give bacteria a cooler environment to breed and multiply themselves.

6. Smoking

Research has shown that smoking is associated with a higher risk of cataracts which eventually affects your eyes. Unfortunately, this is one of the leading causes of vision loss among people over 50 years, and smoking actually doubles your risk of developing this condition.

7. Not Wearing Sunglasses

Constant and extensive exposure to Ultra Violet rays emitted by the sun can damage the retina and ultimately put you at risk of eye conditions like cataracts. So it is essential that whenever you are stepping into the hot sun to make sure you use a pair of sunglasses.

8. Wearing Contacts to Swimming Pool or Shower

Wearing eye contact in a swimming pool or shower can allow bacteria or something worse to get into your eyes. These microorganisms live in fresh water and pools, though it's rare, they can cause a serious eye infection or even permanent blindness.

So here are few tips to taking good care of your eyes:

1. Eating Healthy

Good eyesight begins with a good and healthy food pallette. A well-balanced diet such as eating leafy green vegetables like broccoli, avocado, peas e.t.c, seafoods with Omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel and sardines can help you lower the odds of being obese which prevents related diseases like Type 2 diabetes, a leading cause of blindness in the adult population.

2. Quit smoking

Just as mentioned earlier, smoking makes you likely to get cataracts, so if you have tried to kick the habit before only to start again, keep at it. The more the time you put into quitting, the more likely your success rate.
