For some reason I just looked up “died unexpectedly” on my search engine (currently Brave/duck duck go). I did two separate searches; one dated October 2010 to October 2019, the other from October 2020 to October 2022. I went through about three pages of the search results, gathering the information.
Search One produced mostly articles dealing with ‘how to cope if a loved one dies unexpectedly’. Including how to cope if your cat dies suddenly. There are questions about what this “died unexpectedly” means when it’s put on a death certificate. The chat boards consensus was it simply meant when you died without any warning or being ill.
The first search threw up this article from 2014;
The sudden death of a previous healthy young individual is a rare but tragic event. Every year about 1 in 100,000 people aged between one and 35 dies suddenly of a natural cause. The vast majority [70%] of sudden death cases in the young are caused by diseases of the heart.
Most of these are inherited conditions…
About 15% of sudden death cases in young individuals are caused by conditions outside the heart, in particular bleeding inside the skull and sudden blockage of a lung artery by a blood clot...
The final 15% of cases...are termed sudden arrhythmic death syndrome
Some sudden cardiac death experts have advocated screening programs...However, because these conditions are relatively rare...this approach has not been universally accepted.
Deaths cited in Search One included CNBC anchor man Mark Haines (65), Wynter Pitts, Christian author and writer (38), Loretta Lynn’s grandson Jeffrey (47), High school teacher suffering with flu (36), Head of Russia’s GPU (new KGB) (58), Beverley police officer (42) and a few other notices/obituaries that loved ones had written.
This is from a nine year time period don’t forget.
I further honed my search results by selecting only my country from the filters.
I got a few extra "unexpected deaths".
Alex Navab, American financier (53), a woman on a Qantas flight (34), a police sergeant in Delaware (40).

Search Two was in stark contrast to Search One.
There were a few articles, but a lot less then in Search One. Also, those articles generally dealt with the topic of unexpected deaths. The thesaurus offers six ways to say died unexpectedly, such as died suddenly. There’s an article about how the term “died suddenly” is now trending. There’s also a few pieces about what to say in these circumstances.
There are now even websites where these “unexpected/sudden deaths” are being recorded, such as from The Skeptical Investigator;
Since early 2021, there have been over 700 deaths and thousands of incapacitating injuries to young professional athletes in top physical condition. They collapsed or died from a stroke or heart attack.
Then this happened this summer in Canada…
Dr. William Makis, MD of Alberta, Canada posted this on gettr.com.
“I have now tracked 13 Canadian doctors’ "sudden deaths". Three doctors died while exercising (two swimming, one running), two of them were very high-level athletes, and three doctors died "in their sleep" unexpectedly. Two doctors also had aggressive cancer that had arisen within the past year.
However, it is immediately conspicuous that the search results are overwhelmingly returning actual unexpected deaths. Remember, back in 2014 they were rare.
Notable deaths listed on this search included Ashton Carter, former US Defence Secretary (68), Jason Jenkins, Miami Dolphins MVP (47), Ashvin Luximon, Eastenders actor (38), Eric Oritz, World Champion Cheerleader (30), Steve Grimmet, rock musician (62), Ray Liotta, actor (67). Although most of the deaths that appeared on the first couple of pages were people who had died from ordinary families.
Mum at wedding (29), Husband and father (36), a doctor (52), member of the national guard (26), lawyer (?), a ten year old, a fifteen year old, a 17 year old.
This is from just a two year window mind.
Once again I filtered for the UK only and it threw up a few more "unexpected deaths".
Bodybuilder (28), engineer (36) pupils from years 12 and 13, a Canadian TV presenter (24), TikTok creator (36), another 17 year old, news anchor’s sister (58), a pre-med student (20), doctor (51), doctor (57), KK, Indian singer (53).
Here are just some of the websites that are logging these deaths:
