Yesterday in an emergency session the UN General Assembly debated a resolution put forward by Jordan which called or an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce” between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza. It also demanded “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provision of lifesaving supplies and services for civilians trapped inside the world’s largest open air prison.
The international community voted 120 for the resolution in a show of solidarity with Palestine. To their eternal shame 14 nations voted against the ceasefire resolution led by Israel and the United States. There were 45 abstensions including many allies of Israel, such as the UK, which have given it the green light to commit war crimes in Gaza.
The US and its Israeli proxy suffered another defeat when an amendment condemning Hamas was rejected by the General Assembly.
This historic vote, with its demand for an immediate ceasefire, makes it clear that a majority of the world community demands that Israel adheres to its obligations under international law.
The UN resolution demands that Israel comply with its obligations under international law, as outlined in the 4th Geneva Convention, by providing water, food, medical supplies, shelter and electricity to the defenceless population of Gaza, half of whom are children.
The current situation contains within it the grave risk of the war against Gaza escalating into a regional war which will cause immense suffering for the people of the Middle East. A regional war would greatly increase the risk of an open military conflict between US and Russia with all the terrible dangers that would entail.
People of good conscience who want an end to the slaughter of civilians in Gaza should take action and demand their government supports the call for: An Immediate Ceasefire.
