I don't know why only human clings to the past. I think thinking about the past takes lots of energy from him or her. What a ridiculous thing we do ! According to Eckhart Tolle, "NOW" has the strongest power so that we can get rid of every misfortune. Off course, we can learn from the experience of the past. However, we must not think and worry about the past over and over again. I think it needs exercises not to cling to the past. I have two ways. First, I think the past persistently again an again until I get fed up with it, and I realize that how ridiculous my brain is ! Second, I spend my energy to another thing. I'm so busy that I have no time to think about the past.
Today, I want to quote sentences written by Eckhart Tolle.
In The Power of Now, I mentioned my observation that after two ducks get into a fight, which never lasts long, they will separate and float off in opposite direction. Then each duck will flap its wings vigorously a few times, thus releasing the surplus energy that built up during the fight. After they flap their wings, they float on peacefully, as if nothing had ever happened.
If the duck had a human mind, it would keep the fight alive by thinking, by story-making. This would probably be the duck's story: "I don't believe what he just did. He came to within five inches of me. He thinks he owns this pond. He has no consideration for my private space. I'll never trust him again. Next time he'll try something else just to annoy me. I'm sure he's plotting something already. But I'm not going to stand for this. I'll teach him a lesson he won't forget." And on and on the mind spins its tales, still thinking and talking about it days, months, or years later. As far as the body is concerned, the fight is still continuing, and the energy it generates in response to all those thoughts is emotion, which in turn generates more thinking. This becoms the emotional thinking of the ego. You can see how problematic the duck's life would become if it had a human mind. But this is how most humans live all the time. No situation or event is ever really finished. The mind and the mind-made "me and my story" keep it going.
we are a species that has lost its way. Everything natural, every flower or tree, and every animal have important lessons to teach us if we would only stop, look, and listen. Our duck's lesson is this: Flap your wings---which translates as "let go of the story"---and return to the only place of power: The present moment.
In the area of vicinity, one couple was arrested because they obstructed the passage. They put lots of planters on the passage, which was so narrow that neighborhood had to walk sideways. One neighborhood complained about it everyday. "That is the only one shortcut to my wife tomb. Why do that crazy guys obstruct our road! This road is not theirs!" He called the police again and again. Other neighborhood was very afraid of the couple cause they were always yelling, shouting, and screaming. When he told them not to put things on the road, they came after him and tried to beat him. So, neighborhood came to do nothing. Neighborhood almost gave up going thorough the road and continued complaining every day. Without some action, complaining will never stop. Then, many neighborhood came together. They went to the police over and over again. After more than 10 years, the couple was arrested. In Japanese law, I hear this problem is very difficult because the road is private one but permitted for general public people walking.
Something like a shock, flopping duck's wings, needs to forget and never to remember the story. I think it is very difficult to control human's anger. Nothing is more troublesome than anger. If we muster how to eliminate to clinging to the past, we cannot control other's mind.
The best ways to be undamaged from other's persistent story are doing the above or running away from a lunatic. (lol)
