당(唐) 나라 때 저명(著名)한 궁정(宫廷) 시인(诗人) 송지문(宋之问)은 무칙천(武则天 : 서기 684 년 - 서기 704 년)이 정권을 장악하고 있을 당시 문학대종(文学侍从)의 직무를 맡고 있었다. 그는 자기 자신이 시문(诗文)에 뛰어나고 훌륭하다고 믿고 당당하였으며 매우 교만하였다. 물론 시문(诗文)에 뛰어났기 때문에 무칙천(武则天)은 그를 중용(重用)하였다. 그러나 뜻밖에 무칙천(武则天)은 그를 오지로 전출시켜 버렸다. 송지문은 어찌된 영문인지 전혀 알수 없었다. 그는 다시 한 번 기회를 달라는 시(诗)를 한 수 지어 무칙천(武则天)에게 전달하였다. 무칙천(武则天)은 송지문의 시를 읽고나서 신하에게 ：“宋卿哪方面都不错，就是不知道自己有口臭的毛病。” 이라고 말했다. 다시 말하면 ”송경(宋卿)은 자기 자신이 입냄새口臭가 난다는 사실을 모르는 가보다.” 는 뜻이다. 송지문의 수치는 이루 말로 다 형용할 수 없었다. 송지문의 사건이 발생한 후 사람들은 정향(丁香)이 구취를 제거시켜 준다는 사실을 발견하게 되었다. 후세인들은 정향(丁香)을 “고대(古代)의 구향당(口香糖)” 이라고 칭했다.
