3종(三种)의 패모(贝母)는 공효(功效)가 다르다.
대부분의 사람들은 패모(贝母)는 지해(止咳)의 양약(良药)이라고 알고있다. 패모(贝母)는 천패모(川贝母)와 절패모(浙贝母)와 토패모(土贝母)의 3종(三种)이 있으며 공효(功效)는 각각 다르다.

2. 절패모(浙贝母)：대패(大貝) 또는 상패(象貝)라고도 칭한다. 성미(性味)는 고(苦),한(寒)이다. 해수흉통(咳嗽胸痛)과 오한발열(恶寒发热)과 성취농담(腥臭脓痰)을 토해 내는 증상과 대변건조(大便干燥)와 설홍구건(舌红口干) 등 증상(症状)이 있을 때 절패모(浙贝母)를 사용한다. 절패모(浙贝母)는 사화(泻火)의 공효(功效)가 천패모(川贝母) 보다 훨씬 강하다. 절패모는 청화산결(清火散结) 작용이 있으므로 폐농양(肺脓疡) 치료의 양약(良药)이다. 절패모(浙贝母)는 하루에 3g 내지 10g 을 수전복(水煎服)한다.
신체(身体)가 허약(虛弱)한 노년인들은 약성(藥性)이 완화(緩和)한 천패모를 사용하고 신체(身体)가 열성(热盛)인 소아(小儿)들과 청년인(青年人)들은 절패모(浙贝母)를 사용하는 것이 좋다.
3. 토패모(土贝母)：토패모의 성(性)은 한(寒)이고 미(味)는 고(苦)이며 항염(抗炎) 작용과 항병독(抗病毒) 작용과 항종류(抗肿瘤) 작용(作用)이 강하다. 청열해독(清热解毒) 약물(药物)과 배합(配合)하여 사용한다. 유선(乳腺) 질환(疾患)과 결핵(结核)과 피부종란(皮肤肿烂) 등 질병(疾病)을 치료해 준다. 토패모는 정자(精子)를 사멸시키는 작용(作用)이 있으므로 사용주의를 요한다. 일일 용량은 6g 내지 12g 이며 수전복한다.
