I knew that Carson McCullers, like me, was a woman, and I finished the book with the feeling of having inhabited a city that exists on no map: the city of isolation we carry within. >Reading this novel as a woman, and being aware that it was written by a woman of barely twenty-three, added a layer of wonder for me. McCullers not only wrote about the pain of existing; she did so with surgical precision about what it means to be an "other" in a world that does not see you. Furthermore, although the main characters are men, John Singer, the deaf-mute; Doctor Copeland, the Black physician; and Jake Blount, the drunken agitato, I could feel that the gaze holding them was profoundly feminine. That gaze that focuses on small gestures, on absences, and on the way bodies inhabit loneliness. I remembered my own adolescence, when I was inhabited by that quiet fury from feeling my world was too small, along with that need to create beauty in order not to succumb to everyday pettiness. McCullers draws her with a tenderness that is not condescending, portraying her in her ferocity and her vulnerability, in her clumsiness and her genius. There, I believe, lies the heart of it all: in the author’s ability to turn fragility into an act of resistance. The heart the title speaks of is not one; there are many, and it seems to me that they all beat around John Singer, the silent center of gravity of this small southern universe. Singer is the depository of the dreams, frustrations, and confessions of everyone else. Her characters fight for social justice, for the meaning of life, for love, and all of them, in one way or another, fail. Paradoxically, I felt a strange comfort. Sabía que Carson McCullers, al igual que yo, era una mujer y terminé el libro con la sensación de haber habitado una ciudad que no está en ningún mapa: la ciudad del aislamiento que llevamos dentro. >Leer esta novela siendo mujer, y siendo consciente de que fue escrita por una mujer de apenas veintitrés años, le añade una capa de asombro para mí. McCullers no solo escribió sobre el dolor de existir, sino que además lo hizo con una precisión quirúrgica sobre lo que significa ser un "otro" en un mundo que no te ve, y donde, aunque los personajes principales son hombres como John Singer, el sordomudo; el doctor Copeland, el médico negro; o Jake Blount, el agitador borracho, pude sentir que la mirada que los sostenía era profundamente femenina. Recordé mi propia adolescencia, cuando me habitaba esa furia callada por sentir que mi mundo se me quedaba pequeño, junto con esa necesidad de crear belleza para no sucumbir a la mezquindad cotidiana. McCullers la dibuja con una ternura que no es condescendiente y la retrata en su ferocidad y en su vulnerabilidad, en su torpeza y en su genio. Ahí creo yo que está el centro de todo: en la capacidad de la autora para convertir la fragilidad en un acto de resistencia. El corazón del que habla el título no es uno, son muchos, y me parece que todos laten en torno a John Singer, el silencioso centro de gravedad de este pequeño universo sureño. También reconocí, con un escalofrío, el reverso: cuando a veces nos convierten en ese ídolo mudo sin pedirnos permiso. Lo que más me conmovió es la honestidad con la que McCullers habla del fracaso. Sus personajes luchan por la justicia social, por el sentido de la vida, por el amor, y todos, de una u otra forma, fracasan. Sentí, paradójicamente, un extraño consuelo.
