The high waters persist, but hope is on the horizon! The area featured in this walk is my favorite spot to take morning walks. Living in a community of roughly 150k people, there is a 1,000 acre protected marshland in the middle of the city. Sure, mosquitoes can be a problem in warmer months, but the pests are worth it.
There is so much wildlife and nature to be had in the spring, but the past two weeks have seen the trails in accessible due to the massive high waters of the Mississippi River. If you follow my photos at all, you may have noticed a few pics depicting the high waters of the old river.
For this walk, I stayed on the shoreline to take in the views. Typically this time of year, the water is low enough for the freshwater pelicans and blue herons to be spotted about in the waters...not so much this year. I have noticed a more than usual number of American Coots in the area feeding on the algae, but not as much luck with sighting opportunities of my favorite water bird, the heron. Still, the green of a patch of algae and long grass was fun to photograph (don't mind the rubbish, however!)
A brief walk with some landscapes to enjoy...as well as a stiff north breeze to make the lake feel like the ocean. It's a special moment for us land locked 'Sconnie types in the upper Midwest of North America.
