Another week ready to go, and I feel like I have to mix it up a bit. Not too dreary, not too shoegazey, not too Spacemen 3. Thanks to a rando walk through Walgreens this past weekend to buy Cheaters (yes, reading glasses, if you haven't kept up), this gem came over the speakers. Hattie and Liza had no idea what was going on, but I did...so here we go...my #TTT as initiated by @ablaze :
Del Shannon : Runaway
A weird tune...in the midst of everything going on in 1961, Shannon and his guitar were making music like this. I don't know if Elvis or Mick or Macca were listening, but Lennon was. I believe John actually received a Shannon guitar as a gift while they were on tour (I think). I don't know John, yet, the more I know you, the more I like you...
The Beatles : I'll Be Back
Speaking of Lennon, here might be one of the best Beatles tracks ever. Ever. As rumor has it, this one is based on Del Shannon's Runaway. Just a nugget of secret history. When you get to 1:45 and that chord change happens...well, I'm biased, but that's music.
Well we're still in '63...so:
Way back when none of us were born, there was John, Paul, Del, George, and the Wilsons. After 9/11, my best friend and I took a road trip through the SW states. I remember hearing this song while we were entering LA in a used Thunderbird and thinking, "Shit. this is where this all happened." Passing beneath some overpasses and thinking "Damn, Brian passed through here..." well, that's something for us who think music like this matters. Just me...thanks for stopping by and taking a listen. As always, drop a line!
