For this week's #threetunetuesday, I went old school MP3 files for relics of a long ago period. Again, for many who might read this, you probably weren't born before this band was releasing tracks and LPs. Who is the band in question? It would have to be the English band the Doves.
I found the band through one of my shoegaze strands. The Doves aren't necessarily shoegazers, but their music does carry a heavy dose of that Slowdive/Verve/MBV sensibility. And, if that sensibility is there, I'll take a listen. So let's take a sample...and I hope perhaps I'm catching a few of you off guard with this one tonight!
The Doves : Almost Forgot Myself
The group is the most harmonious of groups. You won't think of the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, or the Beatles when it comes to the vocals. Yet there is an interesting tone to lead singer Jez Williams' sound. Likely the Manchester in him...that's probably it.
This song I always found interesting..., especially with distorted harmonies and the change in tempo at 1:26. I like those "off" harmonies...what can I say?
The Doves : Here it Comes
This is the first song I heard by the Doves...a long time ago. I think it was the blurry piano line and descending verses that drew me in. I think I had to even find a BBC feed online to hear this one. Hello...where did those days go??
The Doves : Snowden
This song, once more, has a "wee bit of that MBV" sound hanging around. Does the over-the-top sound maybe sound a bit like the Lips? I don't know, but I always like the eerie sound to the song. It also makes me want to eventually bag Snowden at some point in the future. What a trip that would be.
