I used chatGPT to better compose reply.

I’ve actually been thinking about this for a long time.

One thing I questioned early on was whether we should even introduce Hive to new users primarily through “earning rewards.”

Most people on Web2 platforms are not there to make money. They are there because the apps are fun, useful, social, addictive, creative, or entertaining.

I even made posts in the past saying we should avoid leading onboarding conversations with rewards. Not because rewards are bad, or because we are hiding something, but because rewards should be the bonus — not the core reason to join.

Let people discover:

  • communities
  • games
  • social experiences
  • creativity
  • tools
  • engagement
  • identity
  • ownership

The earning part can come later naturally.

If the experience itself is enjoyable, people stay.

If the only retention mechanism is “maybe you’ll earn,” then every bear market becomes an existential crisis for the ecosystem.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been experimenting so much with games and gamification inside Hive apps lately.

Glad to see more people exploring this direction.
