The feminine, cold, passive beginning of the universe, opposed to the sun as the beginning of the male, hot and active; the personification of the underworld; hidden, occult wisdom (for example, the moon is an attribute of Isis and Thoth among the Egyptians). In the ancient tradition, the moon "incarnated" in three goddesses: Artemis (Diana), as the goddess of the daytime, bright moon, Selene, as the goddess of moonlight, and Hekate, as the goddess of the black moon, the mistress of ghosts and the patroness of witchcraft. The nickname of Hekate - Three- Faced - traditionally correlates with the three phases of the moon: new moon, full moon, damage, as well as with the three stages of female (wider - human) age: youth, maturity, old age. Among the Slavs, the moon was considered “unkind”: its light is destructive for pregnant women and babies, it “drinks” human souls, in the light of the moon, mermaids come ashore from the water. The idea of celestial marriage, which is also understood as the marriage of heaven and earth, is associated with the opposition of the sun and moon. The image of the moon as a passive, reflecting principle has a parallel in the image of a mirror; cf. in Manly Hall: “In man, the light shines towards the north, but never away from it, because the body has no light of its own, but shines with the reflected glory of the divine life particles hidden within the physical substance. For this reason, the moon is considered a symbol of human physical nature.
In astrology, the Moon is considered a planet. She is the closest celestial body to the Earth and always shows the same “face” to the Earth. Due to the change in its phases, the Moon in astrology is considered an "unstable", "female" planet. She finds her exaltation in Taurus (the bull is the oldest emblem of the moon). Astrologically, the Moon represents the principles of the unconscious, the soul, the feminine, memory, intuition. In an individual horoscope, it symbolizes emotionality, dominates the world of human feelings. Also, the moon is "responsible" for the general state of human health. A harmonious Moon in the horoscope provides a "comfortable background" for life; with such a person is always warm and comfortable.
