English version

Every time I visit The Peñon Beach, I can’t help but feel nostalgic because I used to come here during school vacations, when I was just a child and lived with my parents. This beach has always been shallow, making it ideal for children and also for adults, since it offers a better vantage point to make sure everything is okay.

Now as an adult, with a very different outlook on life, I return to this place and the memories come flooding back. The beach is still there, but everything around it has changed; the community of The Peñon has grown and has long since ceased to be a large tract of land with humble fishermen’s homes. You could say it’s a neighborhood that continues to grow.

In Cumana, mentioning The Peñon is to refer to a tourist spot that for decades became the best place to spend a weekend because, starting in the morning, shops along the beachfront would open, offering meals—including the traditional pepitonas and other seafood delicacies, empanadas, arepas, and sancochos—in other words, a wide variety of Sucre’s cuisine.

Meanwhile, from the afternoon until the early hours of the morning, the nightlife came alive with several bars and breweries featuring live music and various attractions. The Peñon was the epicenter of dancing, revelry, and joy for both Cumana locals and tourists. The Carnival and Holy Week periods were unforgettable because the celebrations never seemed to end.

However, only memories remain from that time. El Peñón Beach is still there, and the view looks much the same as it did back then if you look out toward the horizon; nevertheless, this place is no longer the paradise of fun where the action began on Friday afternoons and the party wound down on Sunday nights.
