Exploring The Orquidea Street (Eng/Esp)

Walking along the edges of Cumana's Historic District, I passed through La Orquidea Alley, a name that refers to our national flower. This area is part of Mundo Nuevo, and from here you have a spectacular view of San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle on one side and the Gulf of Cariaco on the other.

I walked down this street, photographing every detail I came across. Although the road looks a bit worn, the houses are very picturesque, especially because they have gardens filled with a variety of flowers, plants, and shrubs. One of the most striking was a rabbit-ear cactus in full bloom, combining dark green and red hues.

Around nine in the morning, the streets were deserted; nevertheless, I could hear the meowing of several cats that brought the place to life. They were gathered around what was likely a feast of fish scraps. This alley has access from several directions; I can get there from the El Pui Pui neighborhood, Bolivar Street, or even take a shortcut from here to the Antonio Patricio de Alcala Hospital, exiting through the Las Parcelas neighborhood.

From here I have a spectacular view, as if I were looking out over the city from a castle watchtower. I can make out Gran Mariscal Avenue near the Gran Avenida Shopping Center, so it’s safe to say that several homes located here on The Orquidea Street have wonderful viewpoints right in their backyards.

I continued my exploration until I reached the highest point; the long walk was worth it when a spectacular landscape appeared before my eyes. In the background was the sea, further ahead were the city’s tallest buildings, and in the foreground was the Delfin Marval Stadium; I could make out the details as if the image had been captured by a drone.

Then I decided to head in the opposite direction, where I also came across a breathtaking view: the San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle in all its splendor. This is a great panoramic view. I was surprised to see the birds known as “tortolitas” gazing at the landscape, just as I was. I didn’t waste any time and captured them with my camera.

Caminando por las fronteras del Casco Histórico de Cumaná pasé por el callejón La Orquídea, nombre que alude a nuestra flor nacional. Este sector forma parte de Mundo Nuevo y desde acá se tiene una vista privilegiada del Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia por una parte y del golfo de Cariaco por la otra.

Avancé por esta calle, fotografiando cada detalle que encontraba, aunque la carretera se ve un poco deteriorada, las casas son muy vistosas, sobre todo, porque tienen jardines con variedades de flores, plantas y arbustos. Uno de los más llamativos fue un cactus oreja de conejo en pleno proceso de floración porque combinaba el color verde oscuro con el rojo.

A eso de las nueve de la mañana, las calles estaban solas, no obstante, se escuchaba el maullir de varios gatos que daban vida al lugar. Estaban reunidos alrededor de lo que posiblemente era un festín de restos de pescado. Este callejón tiene acceso por varias partes, puedo llegar desde el sector El Pui Pui, la calle Bolívar o inclusive tomar un atajo desde aquí hasta el Hospital Antonio Patricio de Alcalá saliendo por el sector Las Parcelas.

Desde aquí tengo una vista privilegiada, como si estuviera apreciando la ciudad desde una garita del castillo. Puedo distinguir la avenida Gran Mariscal a la altura del Centro Comercial Gran Avenida, así que se puede decir que varias viviendas ubicadas acá en Calle La Orquídea tienen estupendos miradores en el patio.

Continúe mi exploración hasta llegar al punto más alto, la larga caminata valió la pena cuando ante mis ojos apareció un paisaje espectacular. En el fondo estaba el mar, más adelante los edificios más altos de la ciudad y, en primer plano, el estadio Delfín Marval, lograba percibir los detalles como si la imagen hubiera sido captada por un dron.

Luego decidí avanzar en sentido contrario, acá también me topé con una vista impresionante, el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia en todo su esplendor. Esta es una buena panorámica. Me sorprendí al apreciar a las aves conocidas como tortolitas contemplando, al igual que yo, el paisaje. No perdí tiempo y las capturé con mi lente.
