Exploring the Caigüire Cross (Eng/Esp)

Today I’m going to show you another iconic spot on the shores of Caigüire Beach: La Cruz, as the locals call this place of prayer. There isn’t a building there, but rather a large wooden cross, which remains in good condition despite the salt air and the elements. It’s made of the same material used to build boats, which is why it’s so sturdy.

This place is kept very clean; it could even be considered a plaza. Around the cross are a few benches where you can rest or even say a prayer while gazing at the cross against the backdrop of the horizon. Traditionally, fishermen and sailors dedicate themselves to the Virgin of the Valley, patron saint of the Oriente region, before setting sail.

During Holy Week, the blessing of the sea takes place here, along with other outdoor religious activities, such as Catholic ceremonies and celebrations. A rustic railing runs along the perimeter of the site, but the floor is made of concrete inlaid with various stones. Also, as decoration, there are some button mangroves, whose fruits are not edible because they are actually small, dry, woody, and very hard seeds.

On the other side, toward the highway, several buildings and houses can be seen, all framed by the imposing Pan de Azúcar hill, which, although lacking in green spaces, serves as the grand backdrop for the community of Caigüire.

So this rustic outdoor cross offers a spectacular view: the Gulf of Cariaco and the other coast of Sucre lie behind the cross, and a large mountain can be seen in the foreground. As a result, the atmosphere—with the soothing sound of the waves—invites reflection.

Hoy les muestro otro lugar emblemático a orillas de la playa Caigüire, se trata de La Cruz, como se refieren los pobladores a este espacio de oración, allí no hay una edificación sino una gran cruz de madera, misma que permanece en buen estado ante el salitre y la intemperie, el material es el mismo con el que se fabrican los botes, de allí su fortaleza.

Este lugar se conserva muy limpio, incluso podría considerarse una plaza. Alrededor de la cruz están algunos bancos para descansar e inclusive realizar alguna plegaria mientras se observa la cruz con el horizonte de fondo. Por tradición, los pescadores y marinos se consagran a la Virgen del Valle, patrona del Oriente, antes de zarpar.

En Semana Santa se realiza la bendición del mar en este espacio, además de otras actividades religiosas al aire libre, tales como ceremonias y celebraciones católicas. Una rústica barandilla bordea el recinto, pero el piso es de cemento con incrustaciones de diversas piedras. También, como ornamentación, se aprecian algunos mangles botón, cuyos frutos no son comestibles porque en realidad son pequeñas semillas secas, leñosas y muy duras.

Del otro lado, hacia la carretera, se observan varios edificios y casas, todo enmarcado por el imponente cerro Pan de Azúcar, que, aunque está escaso de áreas verdes, se presenta como el gran telón de la comunidad de Caigüire.

Así que esta rústica cruz al aire libre posee la virtud de tener una vista privilegiada, el golfo de Cariaco y la otra costa sucrense están por detrás de la cruz y por delante se aprecia una gran montaña, por lo tanto el ambiente, con el relajante sonido de las olas, invita a la reflexión.
