I'm not surprised the mullet became a sticking point, I think exactly the same thing would have happened at my table XD
My kitsune (an old character that I recycled into a more recent game) just got called "fox child" or "fox girl" often with "angry" prepended (the other players do remember her very easy name, it does get used sometimes, but not often XD). In fairness to the other players, what's written on her character sheet under "concept" is literally "angry little girl" (she's 17 with a stereotypical tragic backstory that was rewritten to be more stereotypically tragic so I could give the first time GM as many easy plot hooks as possible). She more recently acquired the nickname of "Nutbuster" after she rage shifted into her war form while attacking some Hunters. In trying to be somewhat tactical (as in me the player because the stupid character had done what the Hatred and Vengeance against Hunters filled character would do and gone after a group of 6-7 Hunters and 2 mages by herself) I decided she was going to attack one of the Hunters low rather than risk jumping for the head and I rolled way too well.
