Why can't trolls be intelligent? :D

Do you need to have a lot of vertices for vertex painting to work? I've only really tried it a couple of times in 3dC and could never get a result I found acceptable (it's entirely possible I have completely unrealistic expectations). Found ptex better for detailing but a pain in the system to work with.
