Also I remember that Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from when I was a kid, had no idea it was based on an actual game though I should have guessed given how many cartoons in that era was merchandising.

When did you first get into tabletop wargames or RPGs?

Approximately a hundred million years ago when I was at uni. Early 2000s x_x

What first attracted you?

There wasn't any real attraction as such. My housemates, friends and ex (that I was with at the time obviously) had been marathoning Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale and then the housemate who was subletting rooms to the rest of us asked if we wanted to try DnD proper. We kind of vaguely knew tabletop roleplaying games existed but nothing beyond that so were like yeh sure why not.

I didn't end up liking the DnD system but contracted terminal roleplaying.

Which games do you play?

Currently old World of Darkness (because that's what I have resources for). I still have my (very beat up because the guy I loaned it to back at uni apparently doesn't know how to take care of things -_-) Shadowrun 3e book and it still holds a special place in my heart for being the first system that I bought and GMed.

_{one of the players in my current group asked me about it a few years ago as they wanted to try it out, I said I didn't feel comfortable running that system for them at the time, the other kids are borderline adults now so it would be fine but they're all addicted to WoD and I don't have a problem with this, so I'm just running a Shadowrun style game inside WoD for them atm XD}

And I guess the dice system I'm developing counts as my youngest and I are playtesting/debugging it.

Which games WON'T you play?

DnD, much to youngest's disappointment as he has recently really gotten into it, but hasn't really had much opportunity to play.

Generally, I don't like killing player characters (unless they do something stupid or heroic or stupidly heroic and a Deus Ex would break things, or the player's plan is to have the character die at the end or at some point, if a player just tires of a character we usually just leave them somewhere on the off chance we might go back and get them later or they make cameos in other games) so I'll generally refuse to play games with a high death count. I don't mind playful PvP (we have a casual Redcaps game where a lot of that happens) or groups/individuals that start off opposed (I have started a few SR games like that before bringing the team together) but characters intending on actually killing other characters is a hard and unrelenting no.

Do you play in person? Online?

Much prefer in person, though one of our players was online for a while (we just used Discord, none of the other fancy tools).

RPG Player, DM, both? Neither?

I like both equally, but usually end up GMing.

Casual, competitive, or never wargamer?

Never. Not smart enough xD

Do you also collect and paint miniatures?
Do you craft terrain?
Do you 3D print miniatures, terrain or bits?

I'm not that smart.

Youngest has some minis for DnD but buys them pre-painted if he can because he doesn't want to paint them himself. We are getting a 3d printer and he now wants to learn Blender so that he can print minis.

Has anyone on Hive been particularly helpful?

Not in this specific instance. Aside from aforementioned making me vaguely aware that there are actually ttrpg Hive communities (which I figured there would be but I haven't looked). But now I know about this particular one I'm somewhat inclined to sub and post my ttrpg writeups into it. Only if that's okay >_> Does that count?

What would you say to someone interested in getting into tabletop for the first time?

Honestly if it's roleplaying and I know them to some value of knowing them and they're not fixated on a particular system I'd probably offer them a one shot so they hopefully have at least a polite if not good first time (have seen and heard of way too many horror stories online that puts people off roleplaying for a long time if not forever) before suggesting checking out flgs and/or online.
