I don't think you're wrong, I think I'm just seeing magic differently. Like my interpretation is that it's being seen as a tool that ze needs to learn to function without in case there's a situation where they shouldn't use magic for everything whereas I see it as an in-built thing and the equivalent is to figure out how to function without eyes in case you go blind one day (or lose use of legs or lose an arm or whatever).
