I don't know how diary or personally explorative the "personal explorations" are but that does seem to be the kind of thing unis should be geared towards as much as rehashing/being familiar with old stuff.
Can understand your miff if it's pretty much a diary though.
when you said you couldn't remember the fancy name for it I jumped straight to "personal knowledge base" but surely nobody would submit one of those as an assessment piece
Maybe you need to correct your students and let them know you are a profess...ional XD
