On my way down to San Diego Co. this past weekend I stopped off at a view point that I have driven by countless times, but never stopped at. This seems to be something I am doing a lot more these days.
The view point is called Las Flores View Point and is located on the 5 fwy, just south of San Onofre, the old nuclear power plant, also known to us locals as the nuclear boobs.

Anyway, when I parked and got out to see what I could photograph I was greeted by the fattest squirrels I've ever seen.

They were everywhere and there were a lot of them.

It seems the sightseers have been feeding them lots of human food and they have ballooned up, just like their benefactors.

This little guy thought I was one of those benefactors. Unfortunately for him I didn't have anything to offer.

The fatter ones seems to almost slide across the ground when they ran around. It was really something to see.
Other than the fat squirrels the views are really nice here, but it was still a bit hazy when I arrived. On a clear day you can see Catalina island with no problem.

The ground you see before the ocean is actually about 100' cliffs down to the water.

Just up the road about 1 mile is the famous San Onofre beach campgrounds.

I have fond memories of camping there when I was younger and surfing the nice waves SanO has to offer. Just past San Onofre power plant is Trestles, which is a world famous surfing spot. And all of the land immediately surrounding Los Flores is USMC Camp Pendleton.
If you are heading down the 5 Fwy to San Diego anytime I'd recommend stopping by Las Flores if just to see the fat squirrels. Just remember to bring them some snacks, maybe some healthy ones.
