Rock is iron oxide or "leaverite", leave er rite there.

As for the foot prints, I read that coyote's will crap on paths whereas cats won't. Not sure about bears. Those little things are good to know when hiking alone without a gun.

Keep picking up those rocks though. Still lots to be found in the mountains and deserts as I'm sure you know.
