On my way back from a gem show in the desert today I decided to stop and take some pictures of a famous rock formation in the Cajon Pass called Mormon Rocks. They were named after the early Mormon settlers who passed through here in the 1850's.
The rocks are a result of the famous San Andreas fault which passes directly through them lifting them up and folding them at various angles.
Of course humans don't care. We come through and build railroads, highways and critical freeways right on top of the fault.
In the next pictures you can see the river rock cemented in layers from a time when the ground was flat and had material deposited on top of each other producing the layers. Now, because of the fault they stand almost vertically.
The rocks are located about 30 -45 minutes outside of LA in the Cajon Pass just off the 15 freeway. If you ever drive from Southern California to Las Vegas you can't miss them.
