It’s just a matter of practice. A few years ago, I tried to achieve a lucid dream but gave up on it.
A few times, I briefly regained conscious awareness that I was dreaming, but I would wake up very quickly each time.
I know for a fact that it’s possible, based on my own experience and the accounts of people who write about it.
