[🇪🇸 - 🇺🇲] ¡Alimentación complementaria exitosa! 🍽️ // ¡Successful complementary feeding!
Hola Papitos y Mamitas de la comunidad ❣️
Hello Papitos and Mamitas of this community ❣️
Today I am writing to all the parents of this community to tell you about the success of my effort and dedication with the complementary feeding of my baby. I am very happy for my son's acceptance of the foods that make up his meals, which I have dedicated myself to the task of choosing first of all fresh and in good condition. Some time ago I read in an article that the success of complementary feeding was based on what the mother ate during her pregnancy. If you eat lots of vegetables, proteins, fruits and stop counting the thousands of healthy foods; these will be better accepted by our children when they start their complementary feeding. Since I was on a diet during my last three months of pregnancy, I ate a lot of vegetables, I had no problem because I love them.
First I will talk about the foods that have been totally accepted by my son. Maximiliano will be nine months old next Monday and he loves fruits such as pears, green apples and bananas. Among the vegetables he loves to eat are pumpkin, carrot, tomato, onion, zucchini, red bell pepper, avocado, and broccoli. The proteins he likes are eggs and chicken. On the other hand, I should mention that he doesn't love potatoes very much when I serve them alone, but he eats them when accompanied. Among the more structured meals I have made for him is the typical Venezuelan perico, which is nothing more than tomato and onion finally chopped into small squares and eggs are added and stirred very well. He also loves banana, cinnamon and oatmeal pancakes. She loves the homemade compotes I make for her, I try to mix two fruits together with oatmeal or well-cooked rice. Although it is double work for me, I try to vary a lot his meals and presentations so he doesn't get bored of any food.
There were also foods that did not do him any good since Maximiliano suffers from atopic skin and is very delicate. With citrus fruits he did not do well. The first time I gave him Kiwi to try, he was 7 months old. I started to notice that his skin was breaking out in circular welts and I stopped it right away. Then I wanted to try orange and it happened the same way. I ruled these foods out for the time being, but her pediatrician recommended that I reintroduce them after her first year. I have to mention that looking for information about allergenic foods, I read in some scientific article that it is not medically and scientifically proven that these foods prevent any allergies, whether they are introduced at the beginning or at the end of complementary feeding of our children. But since theory is one thing and practice is another, for now we have ruled out citrus foods for Maximiliano.
I feel very excited to see my son eating with desire and care. At the beginning it was hard to introduce any type of food, but with perseverance, patience and dedication everything is possible. The 5-day rule indicated by his pediatrician did not fail me. This rule consists of introducing a new food for 5 consecutive days in different presentations: porridge or puree, mashed, grated, in cubes suitable for BLW and in wedges or juliennes. I tried not to lose my cool on days when I ate very little or nothing at mealtime. Because I remember my younger sister preparing about 3-4 meals for her older son when he was a baby and until she found the one he liked and accepted to eat she was not satisfied. How tiring!
I must report that none of their meals contain sugar or salt in their preparations. I took this practice as a reference from a very dear friend from Germany who told me about the recommendations suggested by the WHO (OMS). These are not necessary but can be added to our children's diet from the age of two, which is what I consider ideal to try to avoid diseases such as hypertension and diabetes in the future. I'm not going to lie about the fact that he will never taste anything sweet. ¡Not even that bald, not even with two wigs! I am fair and realistic. But I try as much as possible to make her diet as healthy as possible in her first year of life. Every family, every parent is free to choose how to raise and educate their children and this is the one I have chosen.
