I've seen lots of inspiration on pinterest on 3D art as well as rock art.
What I do I combine the two. I paint 3D art on rocks. A friend gave me a lot of rocks I don't know where she gets them but some are perfectly round and surface shiny. Good to make as medium.
First I washed the rock/stone to make it more shiny and remove some residue of oil if it has some, so that my paint would stick on the surface better.
Make an outline of the subject using pencil.
The start putting colors.
I just used ordinary acrylic paint.
Then put some highlights and shadow to make the subject more realistic. And finish it off with with putting fixative on the surface to fix the paint and make the paint last for a longer time.
