Through a child's eyes | My entry for #Monomad Challenge [ENG-ESP]
Hello, Hive black-and-white photography lovers!
I can confidently tell those who have never visited Cuba that they will discover a place unlike any other in the world. I am not referring to the images found in typical tourism promotions—which, sadly, have grown increasingly detached from reality over time for various reasons.
You might find it hard to picture what I mean, and that is understandable. But try to visualize an entire country without electricity.
This happened just a few days ago. All of Cuba was left without power due to a breakdown that caused a total disconnection of the national electrical grid. Elsewhere, chaos would likely take hold of people's minds, but here, hope and the desire to smile endure—despite everything. Fortunately, we still have art without limits—or at least, that is what we want to believe.
If you are a frequent visitor to my blog, you know about the privilege we enjoy as residents of Santa Clara—a city in the center of the island—where cultural spaces keep their light shining even when torrential rains fall or the power goes out, threatening to plunge everything into darkness.
That is exactly what happened tonight at the local hub for young artists. A trova and poetry event was scheduled, and every effort was made to ensure it wasn't cancelled. It was the only refuge left to us amidst all our troubles; it was the very light that kept us from going under.
Someone brought a portable battery with stored power, making it possible to meet the minimum electrical needs for the sound and lighting required by the musicians and poets.
The aforementioned contrast seemed perfect to capture in images; that is why I decided to share these photos with you—shots taken with the specific intent of capturing unique moments in which a charismatic boy—the son of the café owner who was supplying drinks for the event—was having fun with a colleague’s camera and living out his dream of becoming a budding photographer.
These weren't staged photos, and that’s what brought me the most joy.
I’ve always said that children are magical. Here is proof of that. Magic in their gestures, in their budding photographer instincts, in their gaze, their smiles...
And so, fortunate enough to experience what might have gone unnoticed, I smile and bid you farewell for now—until the next black-and-white frame—but not without first sending each of you a hug filled with light!
Remember: don't forget to smile!

Recuerden, ¡no olviden sonreír!
