Our calling as christians is to be doers of God's works. If our faith is only shown in words then we are not showing it was we ought to. More importantly, it is how we treat people everyday.
Whether people treat us we'll or not, or whether we get appreciated for it or not, whatever the case may be it should not keep us away from doing good. Reciprocating kindness to people who are kind to is good but it should not end with them alone. Part of what justifies our Christianity is when we choose goodness regardless of how we feel.
Our feelings is one thing we need to put aside of we wish to have a serious and effective walk with God. The Bible says in Galatians 6:10 that as we have the opportunity, we should do good to all people, especially those in the household of faith. We should be able to see a fellow brethren in one form of challenge or the other help them out of we have the capacity to.
Living life this way proves and interest and desire to doing the will of God because it is God's will that we do good to one another. This is the proper way to model our lives as followers of Christ
