Faucets kind of died in 2017 when Google Adsense refused to allow their ads on faucet sites.

The business model of faucet sites is that they'd earn from pay-per-impression advertising (because every visitor to their site who wanted some faucet coins was an impression). They then shared some of that advertising money by giving out some cheap altcoins. Once Google pulled the advertising there was no money to buy coins for the faucet.
