The ancient and historic Colosseum of Rome opens its doors.
Day 3: Tuesday February 23rd
Tuesday dawned a beautiful day. I was ready to have the typical toasts with jams and chocolate spreads for breakfast. I must say I was not used to eating such a sweet food so early in the morning, but after all I was willing to experience the diversity of cultures.
We started our walk on foot from the inn, after a few blocks, down the street we could notice that we were getting closer and closer to the magnificent Coliseum of Rome, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater. Once there, with reserved tickets and having to wait patiently for a problem with the electric power to be solved, we seized the opportunity to watch the immense Arch of Constantine closely; it is one of the two famous arches located in the surrounding area of the Palatine complex, together with the Arch of Titus.
We were finally able to enter the Coliseum, the main symbol of the city and the country. I have to confess that it was much larger than I imagined. We took many pictures from different angles, while admiring the historic structure. There, I learned so many interesting things; such as the oldest and current uses of the coliseum. Anyway, there are so many diverse and extensive anecdotes, I just could not tell them all here.
After the great experience of the Coliseum, we went to the Palatine and Roman Forum located just in front. We could not find the entrance at first, but as the saying goes: 'traveling without getting lost is not traveling'. We finally entered the government headquarters of the former Roman Empire, which conquered almost the entire known world in its time.
And so it came to pass that Tuesday, with a camera full of pictures that captured extraordinary moments, moments that, more than in the camera itself, were inexorably recorded in my memory and heart.
Afterwards, we went to taste a typical Italian pizza in a traditional ristorante nearby. Before going back to the inn, I was able to communicate with my family in Venezuela. The truth is that I missed them a lot, but what I wanted most was to tell them all the adventures I was living.
It was time to rest, since the expected visit to the Vatican City, the following day, was very promising.
To be continued…
The adventure will continue in the next post. Don't miss it!
