Mm, Also, reading this again, thinking about Chasing the Money and then regretting the time spent.
Looking for commissions through forums = chasing the money.
Doing Fan Art to try and Get Noticed, without a long term strat = chasing the money.
Copying other successful artists in style or subject matter = chasing the money.
Instead try to be more intelligent / thoughtful / conscious about how we chase the money.
EX:
Commissions targeted specifically for specific groups of people, based on your strengths, which are a component of a larger creative project.
Example:
You are doing a bunch of imaginative landscape sketches. Could you do a collection worldbuilding series, and then license your work creative commons to some roleplayers or some visual novel builders, or some type of visual storytelling project, in addition to creating your own project?
Could you open up commissions to paint people's houses, or landscapes that they love or imaginative landscapes from fandoms that you enjoy - Middle Earth?
Or from some sort of public domain work?
Or could you collaborate with a comic artist, or a storyboarder who needs environment paintings?
How can you combine your efforts into a multi- part thing?
