Today I will talk about the Olympic Coins, issued by the US Mint to celebrate the Olympic Games.
The Mint issued many coins about the Olympic Games. Most of them depict a sport but a few others are "pure" Olympic coins. I will show you these.
All are $1 coins, with 90% silver and the weight is 26.73g.
The first is the 1983 "Olympics". It was issued to celebrate the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, California. The reverse of the coin depicts the head and upper body of a bald eagle.
The second coin is the 1988 "Olympic", issued to to commemorate the participation of the United States in the 1988 Summer Olympic in Seoul, South Korea.
The third coin is the 1992 "Olympic", issued for the XXV Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain and Albertville and Savoie, France. The reverse features the Union Shield with olive branches to each side. This coin is also known as the "Nolan Ryan" coin but the Mint denies the copy. Compare and decide...
The fourth coin is the "Paralympics Wheelchair", issued to commemorate the XXVI Olympiad held in Atlanta, Georgia. The reverse of the coin features the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games logo.
The fifth coin is the 2002 "Olympic", issued for the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The reverse features the skyline of Salt Lake City with the Rocky Mountains in the background.
