This project was started out on a whim. Unplanned and totally not needed since it's the rainy season in the country already. But I just felt like using my recycled cotton yarn stash again. I know I made a promise to work on all my WIPs but that doesn't mean I should not entertain my out-of-the-blue ideas anymore.

I shared a portion of the process in my video about the criss cross double crochet variation last week. I'm glad I gave in to the urge to make a new project, I discovered something new. I guess that's just how it is. I might be stuck a little bit longer with my WIPs. Oh well...

Anyways, this sun hat is for none other than my little girl. When she found out it was for her, she has been checking up on me every now and then, asking if she could wear it already. That is actually the main reason why I finished this before all my other WIPs. I crocheted even while I'm in bed, resting (I wasn't feeling very well last week) just so I could finish this project right away.

I used one of my metal hooks which is why now, I can feel the callouses forming on my fingers again. One of my hooks with plastic handles broke the other week so I returned to using my metal hooks. By the callouses and the broken hook handles, you can tell my crochet grip and tension is a bit tight. Letting loose is a bit too arduous a task for me when crocheting. When I am in the zone, I barely notice it but after pausing for a bit and taking a look at my work, I can see tight stitches which then results to me having to frog my work. My mom is more the relaxed crocheter between the two of us.

Going back to the sun hat, the part that goes directly to the head is composed of single crochets. Once again, I used the perfect crochet circle technique to make that round hat top. Sometimes I'd like to think that I'm just making these crochet video tutorials for my future self. I hope these videos help somebody else's crocheting journey - especially my fellow left handers.

The brim or the flap or whatever it is called (the one that protects the face from the heat of the sun) is the tricky part of this sun hat. I wanted it to be like those pretty lady hats that has a break at the back with a bow or a floral design on it. I used double crochets on this part with a lot of random increases here and there. Not really technically random, I just forgot where I placed the increases. I was crocheting while I was sick so I kinda forgot to take note of the stitches I made. And come to think of it, I made this sun hat freehand! Overall it's just made up of basic stitches, but a freehand sun hat, that's another freehand project on my crocheting milestones!

Finally, the bow is a bigger version of the bumpy bow crochet headband only not bumpy, and I used a crochet band to hold the bow together instead if just winding the yarn around it. The bow was intended to make it a cute girly sun hat, but then my kid just went "yee haw!" as soon as she put it on. So much for the girly pictorial, she has run off with her bouncy horse, in her cute girly crochet sun hat.
