The tour guides want to steer you to the Plaka district. It is very Chic high end haughty taughty glamor shops. This was not for us. We spent two days in the Monastiraki District Square. The locals go here for the flea markets, street performers, and endless streets of shops, curios, food vendors and intricacies of every kind. We felt very safe, although it felt a bit earthy and seedy. It was far safer than the subway(Metro). The food was traditional to the locals here. For my music friends, there were a variety of instrument stores. In this one was a vintage Beatles style Rickenbacker bass going at 2500 Eu. Another interesting stop was at a local grocery store. It would remind you of our grocery stores in the 50's to 60's. It is fun to shop and compare prices and brands, always interested in the local take. There were a number of "American" products as staples on the shelf, Greek lettering but USA logos.
