Black walnuts

Here are one of the bags of black walnuts i collected off the side of the road. Actually i had been driving down one of the main roads to town and would dodge these. Yesterday my son and decided to stop and see. I realized they were black walnuts. We are from washington state so we had no clue. So the two of us not wanting to miss the chance at a free score begain filling our shirts and dumping them in on the floor of the suburban.

Knowing we didn't have much time since we had to go pick up the wife from work we hustled to get as many as we could. I'll go get the rest today.

So this is me separating the husk from the hull that holds the nut.

You can see that they are really easy to brake apart. There wet kind of mushy. Some do have little worms in there. (Dont worry there small wont eat much lol) No really they only eat the husk and dont bother the nut.

Here is a little closer look at the hull coming from the husk.

Now after i do all that i give them a good wash and put in a old potato bag that has a bunch of hole. They need good air flow to help dry without molding.

Oh crap i should mentioned first wear gloves lol.
Yes you may have herd the hull from the black walnut can be boiled down and used for dyes. Iam going to try this to stain some pallet projects i have. Well this is just something were doing on the homestead and wanted to share. Thank for checking out.
