Gullfoss Located in the canyon of the Hvítá River (white river)
The Hvítá River is an Icelandic river that begins at the Hvítárvatn glacier lake on the Langjökull glacier in the highlands of Iceland at 64°37′N 19°50′WCoordinates: 64°37′N 19°50′W. The river flows for 40 km (25 mi) before dropping down into a narrow gorge at the Gullfoss waterfall.
Haukadalur geothermal area was first mentioned in written sources going back to 1294, when the local hot springs were activated by an earthquake.
The biggest geysers of Haukadalur are Strokkur and Geysir itself, which gave us the word 'geyser'. Strokkur is very dependable and erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, whereas the bigger Geysir nowadays erupts very rarely. There are also more than 40 other smaller hot springs, mud pots nearby.
Thank you for taking the time to learn and explore the beautiful landscape of Iceland.
