Are you travelling abroad for the first time soon? Or maybe sometime in the future? Regardless, one must be ready for all things that can happen before, during and after you visit another country. Especially if there is a difference in culture and language used.
These pointers are from my personal experience when I traveled for the first time out of the Philippines to Hong Kong.
Luckily, I had experienced friends along that guided me on my successful and supposed to be hassle free travel. But nothing really works out perfectly, so this post is to highlight what I've missed to avoid committing the same mistake again especially by fellow travelers.
NOTE: This is given the country and date were already verified and the plane ticket is already booked.
This will let you decide on the location of each place and can look for a nearby hotel at the center of the area you are going to visit. This will save so much time and money when it comes to commuting from one place to another. Also knowing what places to visit and when to visit them will let you pack what you needed, such as clothes and footwear. You can place them in one plastic bag with a label so you can just pull out the full outfit in go. This will allow you to know the best routes there is to reach a certain destination. So you can check which places is along the way or out of way. Make an estimate of the travel time plus the time you intend to stay in a particular place to accommodate all planned activities for the day.
It will be so much help if you can use a credit card since hotels, admission tickets, even train cards and sim cards can be purchased online and you can just claim them once you arrive either in the airport of that country or at a designated area. This will save you time in lining up and you will be given priority than those who did not make online reservations/ purchases.
Take note that it's much cheaper to exchange your local currency to foreign currency in your own country. Also foreign exchange rates varies depending on their location, like for example the rate in a shopping district and airport is much expensive that the rate outside. So to be safe exchange most of your money before your flight then if you need more cash that's the time you can exchange more in that country.
Checking in online will give you a option to check in your baggage for a fee if it weighs more than the allowed hand carry weight limit, or if you carry items that are not allowed as hand carry such as liquid containers that is more than 100 ml or an umbrella or even sharp objects. These needs to be checked in. The thing is, if you purchase that extra baggage at the airport itself then the amount you have to pay will be likely double than the standard amount if you've done it online. It's better to be safe than sorry. Also this will cause a delay since you have to pay with their own currency and if you are already out of exchanged currency since you are on your way leaving that country you don't have any choice but to go with the rate at the airport. That will be a total rip off. So be prepared.
When outside, like a shopping district or a theme park you are bound to get separated. So having a local sim there equipped with an internet connection /call or text feature will be a great help. I once got separated in Disney land and I found them with no problem at all because we were able to text each other. You can have your own sim in roaming status but I believe that will cost you more. Also having wifi or internet access will allow you to search for information you need faster. Like what train to take and the shops to visit or basically a map to follow to go from one place to another.
You will never know what can happen so proof of identity and legal entry is a must when travelling anywhere abroad.
So if you need anything to ask the waiter or the staff of the store, try to make use of body language or key words. That usually works. Most of the time they are more than willing to help it's just that they can't fully express their answers in the language you can understand. Always be thankful.
Most airport and train stations are huge so exiting to a different point will either lead you lost or you are forced to walk quite a distance. So keep track of the arrows and directions, if you really can't figure it out. ask the locals they would certainly know. So don't be shy. :)
