I had a very wishful thought this morning as I realized that Splinterlands new governance token the "splintershard" actually shares some tokenomics similarities to Axie Infinity's governance token.
I know that discussions have already been held in our communities that "Splinterlands will surpass Axie" or "Splinterlands will mirror Axie's growth", but as of right now that is simply not the case. Regardless of which game you find more enjoyable or having the better future, Axie is king right now, their cheapest characters are in the $200-$300 range and things are quickly getting expensive. Axie has also created their own economy and education system of sorts with their scholars program and the game is changing lives on a daily basis.
What this does show though is an example of what a very successful blockchain game looks like marketcap-wise. It also allows us to see what explosive growth does to in-game investment opportunities such as the governance token.

Now... Axie's marketcap is hanging around the 2.5 billion USD mark while the Splintershard (a brand new token) is hanging under 35 million USD. What really jumps out to me though is the fact that Axie has a max supply of 270 million tokens where the SPS token only has a max supply of 200 million tokens.
IF, and I really mean IF Splinterlands is able to sustain this growth and continue to build great implementations for the game, there is no reason they could not mirror the success of Axie.
I have been adding and staking SPS tokens on Splinterlands with the belief that this insane growth is possible. I can't say this is investment advice because there is a chance that Axie goes down as the greatest blockchain game of all time, I have no idea, maybe their success is non-replicable. However, I don't believe that. I think Axie was the trailblazer the industry needed, but other games such as Splinterlands will also get a chance to make their mark.
For the next ~355 days, there will be SPS airdrops to players of Splinterlands. I can absolutely tell you that you need to be playing the game. Maybe it makes you a millionaire and maybe it doesn't, but if the former is correct, think about how mad you'll be that you didn't at least have 5 battles a day and earn rewards for nerding out with other community members. This could be the explosive growth candidate missing from your portfolio... Maybe check it out!
