I have been trying to think of something that I wanted to do some research on and learn more about today and the solution hit me as soon as I started brewing it: Let's talk coffee. I've become a big fan of coffee in the last few years as my old age has begun to deplete my energy levels (I'm 22, I've just gotten lazier).
I've gotten the chance to grab some really good coffee around the world thus far and am making it a personal goal to travel as much as possible and experience the different food and drinks of the world, including coffee!
So I was curious to know:
What are the top three coffee markets in the world?
3. Germany
During a single year, Germans consume around 375,000 tons of coffee. I was surprised to see Germany on this list but apparently it is a recent phenomenon resulting from the push to produce more environmentally sustainable coffee. Germany is the largest importer of what is known as "green coffee beans", or environmentally sustainable beans. As this type of coffee is growing in market share around the world, the potential for growth has been explosive for Germany and is the reason why they consume and sell such a large amount of coffee. source
2. Brazil
During a single year, Brazilians consume around 676,000 tons of coffee. This one makes a lot of sense to me as they produced and exported over 40 million bags of coffee during the 19/20 season. (source) I had always known that a lot of the world's coffee came from South America, but did not know that Brazilians also drink the most coffee in the world per capita.
1. America
If you American's couldn't tell from your thousands of Starbucks stores, we consume the most in the world. During a single year, Americans consume around 797,000 tons of coffee. I personally probably drink a coffee or two per day, but I didn't realize just how many people actually probably do that. Almost 800,000 tons of coffee is a huge amount and just goes to show how large our world's economy has become. That is just an incredible amount of product.
The best coffee that I have ever had has been in Australia, but I am making a trip to Rome in the next week so that may change quite soon.
